New York, New York!

Our trip to New York and performances at Radio City Music Hall were everything that we had hoped for and more. Upon arrival in New York we were whisked into a beautiful hotel located right across the street from Central Park. We were met there by several former Riverdance cast members who returned to perform at Radio City as members of the flying squad. It was great to have their years of experience on stage to add to our already experienced company and also to catch up with old friends.

The first few days in New York were spent mostly in the theater with the crew setting up the stage, musicians and dancers rehearsing. Every aspect of the show from the stage drummers, to the troupe to the band had extra people for Radio City so it took some time to set everything up with more cast. All of this culminated in a dress rehearsal of the entire show from start to finish on the morning of our opening night. Any minor problems with the show were fixed and by Thursday night we were all ready for our opening.

Performing in Radio City was an absolutely amazing experience. The sheer size of the concert hall is breathtaking and when it's filled with thousands of cheering people its even more incredible. For those of us lucky enough to have been onstage performing I know it was a feeling we will never forget. The show received an enthusiastic standing ovation for every performance too!

During our time between shows in New York, there was a huge array of activities to choose from. Since the hotel was so close to Central Park it was easy to go for a walk there.

The gang in Central Park

The park is huge and you can easily wander around in it for an hour and still not even cover half of it. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Modern Art were all within walking distance of the hotel so those were also popular destinations. Many company members had family in to visit at some point over the two weeks to so one good thing to do with them was sightseeing. There are hundreds of sights to see in New York but some of the most popular were Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. Family and friends didn't just come to sight-see though, they were also very interested in the shopping in New York and so were we! Whether it was the upscale stores on 5th Avenue, the knockoff bags and watches on Canal Street or the hip boutiques in Soho, everyone was able to shop to their heart's content. I think we all left with our suitcases a bit heavier than when we arrived.

It just so happened that we were in New York for St. Patrick's Day, which was an absolute blast. The day started out with the St. Patrick's Day parade through the downtown area. Many company members went to watch the parade live while some chose to watch it on TV from the comfort of their hotel rooms. We even had a dancer and her family participating in the parade. It was a very festive day to wander around Times Square and observe everyone in their plastic green top hats and blinking shamrock pins. Our last show at Radio City was on St. Patrick's Day which made it even more special. After the show we went to a nearby Irish bar to celebrate and several minutes after we arrived Bob Sagat (the host of America's Funniest Home Videos and TV father to toddlers Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen on the series 'Full House') walked in with some friends. We all got a chance to meet him and he was excited to meet us too. It was a fun end to a great day.

The crowning event of our stay in New York was the 10 year Anniversary Gala that was held at the exclusive Metropolitan Club. This black tie celebration took place on the second Tuesday we were in New York. After performing at Radio City we all got ready and were transported across town (with the girls in floor length evening gowns and the boys all suited up in tuxedos) to the party.

It was fully catered by some of the finest chefs in New York and also included several surprises such as a performance by the Celtic Tenors, a towering 10 year anniversary cake, and at the end of the night the distribution of a special issue of Variety magazine with Riverdance on the cover and a feature on the show's 10 year birthday. It was a night we will all remember forever to cap off an amazing two weeks in the Big Apple.
