Denver to New York via the casinos of Atlantic City!
What an eventful few weeks! I joined the merry throng of the Boyne Company in the city of Denver, Colorado, one mile above sea level, in the shadow of the spectacular Rocky Mountains. On arrival, it seemed only right to meet and greet everyone and to celebrate my jet lagged arrival with a night (or, having flown in from England, morning) out in the nearest Irish pub. The thin air made the next evening’s show hard work, especially for the dancers, and many made full use of the oxygen tanks supplied at the side of the stage. Thankfully over the week we adapted to the unusual conditions, just in time to move on – but not without taking in a healthy dose of shopping, visiting the mountains, chipmunk spotting and of course putting in some serious work on our tans. Or lack of.
After Denver we moved on to Sioux City, Iowa, before experiencing three days in Atlantic City. Both the hotel and the theatre in Atlantic City were part of the “Tropicana”, one of the enormous casinos on the boardwalk. It also housed endless shops, restaurants, bars, clubs... in fact; there was very little need ever to go outside. There were even blue skies projected onto the ceilings for those who preferred the outdoor feel! Many of the company spent long hours at the tables playing poker or roulette, some winning as much as $6000, to great excitement. Personally I managed to restrain myself, for fear of not being able to stop (!) - although I did enjoy pouring my small change into the slot machines. Some surprisingly lucrative results emerged from these (though of course not for me. These things always happen to other people). Handy hint: next time you’re anywhere near the Tropicana in AC, head for the “Garfield” slots. First floor, to the right of the plastic palm tree. Good luck. |
