The Boyne
So much for the city - the Boyne chill by the seaside on their last California stop

For our last stop in California this tour we visited Santa Barbara. When you think of typical California with the endless coastline, sunshine, surfers and palm trees waving in the breeze, you’re picturing Santa Barbara. The last 30 minutes of our drive into the town was along the ocean as the sun was beginning to set and it looked just like a postcard. Our hotel was across the street from the beach, which was convenient for those who wanted to relax in the sand (it was a bit too cold for swimming, although a few people took a very quick, chilly dip in the water). The main attraction in Santa Barbara, State Street, was about a mile from our hotel which was very convenient because there was an electric trolly that picked us up just outside the hotel to take us straight there.

This is obviously a town that is made for outdoor recreation. There was a wide, flat boardwalk that ran along the length of the ocean and a grassy area next to it which was usually filled with people picnicking or playing games. In addition to this there was no shortage of vehicles to rent and ride along the beach. They had four-seater bicycles with striped awnings over them, small electric cars that looked like toys that you could drive around the streets, two person bicycles and - the favorite of many troupe members - Segway scooters. These scooters run on two wheels and you stand, balanced, on a platform between the wheels. The machine is propelled forward or backward by you leaning and you can spin in a circle on the spot by twisting a control on the side of the handlebars. After taking a quick 30 minute introduction course at the rental place we were set free to zoom around State Street and the boardwalk.

We had another interesting event at the theater involving water (it seems to be a theme lately!). The washing machines on the first floor are apparently not usually used by visiting companies however; due to the amount of dancing we do in each show, our wardrobe department needed to use them to clean parts of our costume. When the machines started to fill up some of the pipes began to leak and as the female troupe dressing room was located directly under the laundry room, we got flooded. Again! And again, stage management saved us (and our possessions) by acting very quickly to move us upstairs into another area we could use as a dressing room.

Other than that one minor issue, our stay in Santa Barbara was fantastic and everyone agreed we would have been happy to stay for a lot longer. The audiences were welcoming and enthusiastic and the inside of the theater was beautiful. It was made to look like the audience was sitting in a Mexican courtyard complete with clay walls and brightly colored lights hanging all over. It was fun for us on stage too because the colored lights stayed on throughout the show and lent a festive feel to the performance.

After leaving California we headed back to Washington again, this time to the city of Spokane. No one really knew what to expect and so we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Spokane has the feel of a small town but because of our location we had a lot of big city benefits. We stayed in a hotel which was located on a river, next to a park and had a shopping mall and cinema just a few blocks away. The weather was starting to get very cold by the end of our stay so any indoor activities were welcome. On our last night in Spokane (Halloween night) most of the cast decided to head over to the cinema for some old fashioned scary fun. There were a couple different horror/suspense movies playing at the time and so we split into a few groups. It was fun meeting up again after the films were over to debate which one was scarier.

Speaking of Halloween, we also had our Halloween party while in Spokane. It is always a major event in the fall tour as everyone gets decked out in costumes. This year we decided not to limit costumes to a specific theme which seemed to inspire a lot of people to new levels of originality. Some of the best home made costumes involved rolls of chicken wire, gallons of paint, poster board, lots of make up and loads of creativity. We had a costume parade/contest which included many great entries but was ultimately won by the daughter of one our Russian dancers who travels with the troupe. Her costume was a perfect replica of the Russian girls onstage dresses and she even gave us a little dance of her own when she won! So far this was one of our best nights yet this tour.
