NICOLA DEMPSEY, A BOOKWORM BY DAY, DANCER BY NIGHT

MORE RIVERDANCER’S REVEAL THEIR FAVORITES: Since my last blog( which revealed dancers favorite ‘things)’ got such a good response (if I may say so myself!), I figured I’d go ahead and do another feature this week. So, off I set backstage in Baltimore, MD with my pen and paper and set about seeking my next few victims! Unfortunate person #1 was Nicola Dempsey; Nicola is an avid reader especially when it comes to sitting on a bus for several hours at a time! I managed to get a sneaky photograph to support this. Ok! I’ll be honest we set up the photo shoot so had her pose nicely for all the Riverdance fans out there!

I he asked Nicola to make a list of the books she’s read to date since the Shannon began. They include the ‘Hunger Games’ trilogy, ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo’ trilogy, Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and an Amy Winehouse biography. “I like to read in a nice, quiet atmosphere….The bus is perfect for this!” she claims. Nicola is currently reading ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’ by Li Cunxin.

TOKIKO WITH HER ELECTRONICS

Let me next introduce to you the lovely Tokiko Masuda, who was over the moon when I asked her to feature on my blog. She had a hard time narrowing her selection of favorite ‘things’ to one, so we agreed to feature her top two favorites; those being her Apple ipad and Sony headphones. Tokiko got the ipad at Christmas and the headphones were a birthday gift. She always has them in her blue tote so whether it’s at work or on the bus or in the hotel, she can listen to music, skype home or watch movies etc. Like Brian and Shane her ipad allows her to stay in touch with family and friends, write emails or check Liverpool scores. For those of you who don’t know Tokiko she is Liverpool-mad. ” I’m their number one fan….They just don’t know it yet! ” she adds.

NICOLE MCKEEVER AND VISITOR - PET 'NORA'

Along my travels backstage between dressing rooms and quick changes, I stumbled upon Miss Nicole McKeever who is also part of our dance troupe. Nicole managed to smuggle the cutest most well-behaved puppy dog into our make-up room and introduced us to ‘Nora’, her pet dog from New Jersey (NJ) . NJ is home for Nicole and her parents, upon visiting, decided to take Nora on their road trip. It is unfortunate for Nicole that the ‘Rules of the Road’ do not allow pets on the road with us. “Nora would be on the top of my list!’ she adds.

NICHOLE HULL'S BUNK AND ALL HER FAVORITE GADGETS.

So, I know enough about the dancers. What about the crew? What do they like? What can they not live without? Well lucky for you readers and fans I nabbed Nichole Hull in the Riverdance wardrobe department. Nichole just finished mending one of the ‘shivna’ lead crowns. I asked her the same question I asked all the others. Responding with that contagious giggle of hers, she says; “Girl, I love my Netflix ,but I’ve a whole world of favorite things in my bunk!” Considering Nichole spends most of her nights on the crew’s sleeper bus, this is where she stores all her prized possessions. Would she ever be so kind and share this with us? Why, yes of course! Nichole came back the following night to me with a snap shot of her very own bunk and all her personal effects stashed nicely for all of us to see!
As Nichole is a very loyal baseball fan, you can just about make out her Milwaukee Brewers blanket. She has a mesh pocket which has several compartments. Here, she stores her vitamins, midnights snacks, jewellery and such goodies. Of course not to mention her ipad for the beloved Netflix! And with that famous giggle she leaves me stating: “This is where I live, on the road, so I make damn sure I surround it with things I love!’

Following a manic two weeks, Monday’s ‘loud’ bus was full of overly enthusiastic dancers as we pulled up to the amazing Hard Rock Hotel in sunny Chicago. The architecturally impressive building, purposely resembling a champagne bottle lived up to its ‘rock and roll’ reputation in many ways with Led Zepplin memorabilia on our floor, pictures of David Bowie hanging in our room and rock music blasting through the art-deco lobby. After dropping our luggage, we headed off down Michigan Avenue to check out the city. Later that evening, we got dressed up and visited “Japonais”, a Japanese restaurant and celeb haunt in Chicago (Angie and Brad are regulars!). We then finished our much anticipated day off taking in the Chicago blues scene at “Buddy Guy’s Legends.”

On Tuesday, the brunch at “Wildberry Cafe” was a delight and afterwards we took a walk around “Millennium Park”, visiting “The Bean” – a famous sculpture and huge tourist attraction, the Art Institute of Chicago and the lovely ‘Bucktown’ area. Opening night in Chicago beckoned and with the knowledge that our dance director, Breandan de Gallai would be in the audience watching all week, we went in a little earlier to prepare for the show.

Visiting 'The Bean' at Millennium Park

The next day, we were expected for rehearsals at 1pm. Breandan went through the previous night’s performance with precise notes for each number. He acknowledged the fact that it was a difficult tour, but wanted to remind us of the importance of striving for perfection. It’s easy to slip into bad habits with long travel days and shows every day, sometimes two, but it’s such a privilege to be here and performing at our best is something Breandan encouraged. Rehearsals lasted a few short hours and as we finished the show that night, we were collectively excited for a surprise Hen Party we had planned for one of our female cast, Jessie Baffa, who is getting married in June. A fantastic night was had by all and as our week was coming to a close, I decided to dedicate my time to shopping and just taking in the city sights in the scorching sun. Most notably, I made my first major purchase – a “MacBook Pro” laptop computer. Even though I have been planning to buy this for a long time, it didn’t make the payment any easier but I am happy to report that it is unquestionably worth every penny!

Jessie Baffa's (2nd from left) hen party

Saturday was St Patrick’s Day and if any of you ever get the chance to visit Chicago for this, I highly recommend it! It is a huge deal in Chicago with prior preparations including green street lights, shamrock posters, and even some nice art exhibitions with Irish music ringing through the streets. Thousands of people turned out for the St Patrick’s Day parade, each one in green. Our executive producer, Julian, who was visiting for a short while, was even met with some shock and confusion at our hotel for not wearing the emerald colours. Perhaps the most striking of all however is the annual tradition of dying the “Chicago River” a perfect Irish green (Check out the full story – http://greenchicagoriver.com/story.html).

As we were busy with daily notes on stage from Breandan, we didn’t get much time to celebrate, but the atmosphere was electric for the entire weekend. On Sunday, a few of us went to a music session at “Celtic Crossing” Irish pub to end a fantastic week in what I now consider as my favourite city in America.

It’s that time of year again when the memory of former Riverdancer, Dr Eithne Walls, will be marked by her friends, family and former colleagues running the 2012 Flora Womens Mini Marathon to raise money for Dublin’s Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital’s Research Foundation. More information on the work enabled by the fund can be found at www.researchfoundation.ie.

Eithne, a former Riverdancer and a Doctor at the RVEEH, was a passenger along with her friends and colleagues Dr Aisling Butler and Dr Jane Deasy on the ill-fated Air France Flight 447 which disappeared over the Atlantic on June 1 2009. Each June Bank Holiday since then her friends, family, and former colleagues in both Riverdance and the RVEEH have come together to run the Mini Marathon as a way of remembering Eithne.

If you’re already planning to take part in the run and perhaps looking for a cause to support, the RVEEH would be delighted if you’d like to do so on its behalf. To receive a t-shirt and sponsorship card please contact: Emma-Jayne.Verner@rveeh.ie. You can register for the run itself at www.florawomensminimarathon.ie but please remember that registration will close on April 20th or earlier (which is most likely based on recent years) if the race is fully subscribed.

If running the event is not for you this year, please do take a minute to sponsor the runners and to support the important work being undertaken by the Research Foundation – you can donate online at www.researchfoundation.ie where you will also find more information on Eithne, the Foundation’s work and also some pictures from last year’s run. Here’s hoping for some sunshine and plenty of runners for the RVEEH on June 4!“

Fiona McCabe, Irish Dance Troupe, Shannon Company

Mardi gras, cajun cooking, live jazz and creole alligator….Sounds like New Orleans to me! Set in the heart of the french quarter this is the story of five friends celebrating the vivacity and colorful mode de vie in the lovely state of Louisiana. I hear someone calling ‘roadtrip’! It’s our first official day off of the Shannon spring tour and we figure what better way to spend it than in New Orleans. Departing the Houston Hyatt, Texas, one Spanish flamenco dancer, several musicians, a physiotherapist and I begin our 5 hour journey east.

With a blazing early evening sun to greet us we approach our destination. I feel like I have experienced a time warp as I stroll down the buzzing Spanish and french-influenced side streets. I certainly feel like I am back in the 1700′s at the birth of ‘The Big Easy”.

Preparations for Mardi Gras

Making friends with the locals outside the art galleries

After some much hype exploring Bourbon Street and peering in several local art galleries, Marita (Spanish Flamenco dancer) and I hit the world-renowned “Cafe du Monde”. Built in 1862, the charming original french cafe still stands on the same corner at the periphery of the french market on the Mississippi riverfront. She and I sit in golden silence as we wet our apetites with cafe au laits and delicious warm icing dusted beignets. Were we satisfied? Beyond doubt! We happily stroll back to the hotel to meet the rest of our party.

After much debate (due to choice of course) we decide to dine in “Cochon” the rustic, yet contemporary restaurant which seemed to attain much positive review (note the co-owner and head chef is Donald Link who has just been nominated for the James Beard Awards for Outstanding Chef). So, without further ado let the dining continue…..! Eyeing the menu hungrily we order the following: Rabbit stew and dumplings, baked oysters, seafood gumbo, fried alligator and hog jowls.

Fiona McCabe, Matt Bashford, Pat Mangan, Chris Barbour and Marita Martinez Jiminez-Rey feasting in Cochon

Dessert came in the form of music for us at The Columns Hotel (built in 1883) on St. Charles Ave. We absorbed some cajun, live music by singer David Doucet (BeauSoleil) and Al Tharpe. Our own fiddle player, Patrick Mangan simply couldn’t resist joining the duo at the end of their final set. Our music trail continued and for all you savvy jazz fans out there, several members of the Grammy award-winning ‘Rebirth Brass Band’ (from the nearby Tremé) who are also members of Glen David Andrews Band played late into the night at the Frenchman’s Street “dba’ music club. Nothing will ever replicate New Orleans, but with only a mere three cities visited prior to stumbling upon this marvelous city, I’m sure our luck hasn’t ran out just yet.

Down by the Mississippi Riverfront at the French Market

I’ve often been asked by friends, family and even strangers to tell of my travels of far-off lands such as; ” What does Quebec City remind you of?”, “What about our hometown Denver?” or “Have you ever visited the famous landmarks of Washington DC?” So I have decided to make a quick list of the cities we have visited to date on this tour and narrate my memories from each. Here’s hoping it won’t be the last of my visits to these towns. Enjoy the read!

1: Dallas, TX: Stood next to the spot where the late President JFK was fatally shot at the corner of Elm and Houston.

2: Longview, TX: The first spring day of 2012 that I can remember.

3: Houston, TX: Where I had my first helping of spicy Buffalo Wild Wings.

4: Pensacola, FL: Roses, St. Valentines Day and warm, sunny drives along the gulf.

5: Dothan, AL: An Inspiring trip to the bookstore next to our hotel.

6: Savannah, GA: Simply not enough time to tell all about this charming town but if you insist, a nice stroll down by the Savannah River.

7: Augusta, GA: Music legend James Brown’s hometown, Rose Duffy’s debut performance as fiddle player and a sold out Riverdance performance.

Dancers John Grimes and Nicole McKeever celebrate another sold out performance

8: Columbus, GA: One of our two buses unfortunately breaks down en route to Tallahasse.

9: Tallahassee, FL: I complete a successful three mile run.

10: Southhaven, MS: Enjoyed live blues in the original B.B. King’s on Beale Street in Memphis, TN.

11: Tupelo. MS: Tried deviled eggs for the first time and paid a quick visit to Tupelo Hardware Co. Store where Elvis Presley receives his first ever guitar at the age of 10.

I was busy doing laundry today so had a little fun with the few remnants of clean clothes in the bottom of my suitcase. I love having fun matching my stockings and hoes with vintage dresses and such outfits. I decided to add a splash of color (as if the polka dots weren’t suffice) to the piece by adding Ruth’s pin to it. I just adore this Newbridge pendant which was a precious birthday gift. It never leaves my side!

Seventeen years ago final preparations were being made for the opening night of ‘Riverdance – The Show’ in Dublin. Now in Dallas, Texas the same meticulous approach is still being practised as we gather on-stage for a full run-through followed by detailed notes from our executive producer, Julian Erskine. A few hours later, we are warming up; stretching, skipping, core strengthening etc. The tapping of fibre glass rings loudly as we prepare to embrace the stage. As the first few notes of ‘Reel Around the Sun’ begin, I can only imagine how those dancers felt as they stepped out to an eager and unassuming crowd. Exactly two hours later, the exhilarated Dallas audience are on their feet, uplifted by what evidently remains a top class show.

After a quick cool down and the essential discomfort of icing, it’s straight to bed in preparation for the first matinee of the tour. We are brought in a little earlier for a review of the previous nights show and with a few minor tweaks, the second show of the tour gets underway. This is a particularly exciting show for one of our troupe members, James Greenan as he prepares for his first lead performance and what he describes as “the pinnacle of my dancing career”. Leaving his hugely successful performance and Dallas behind, we embark on the first of many “travel show days”.

Our first travel day arrival at hotel

A relatively short journey (2hrs 15minutes) takes us to Longview, Texas. Having offloaded our luggage and freshened up, we make our way to the venue. On travel show days, catering is provided and this provides the perfect setting for relaxing before the official 17th anniversary night. As we perform the final number of this sell out show ‘Heartland’, the audience response is superb! After dancing a show, it is often difficult to wind down so we normally gather to watch DVDs and chill out together. Unsurprisingly, the first pick of the tour is ‘JIG’ – a documentary film about irish dancing.

The following morning, we are on the road to Houston, Texas. Spending the weekend at the plush downtown Hyatt Hotel is a treat. After the show Julian hosts a gathering with food and drinks in the hotel lobby to mark the beginning of the tour. This is greatly welcomed as we are happy to trade our sweaty tracksuits for our finest threads.

Group shot beside sculptures in Houston

On first impressions, Houston is like any other city with a host of various skyscrapers. However, it is surprisingly quirky with much street art, an impressive theatre district including our beautifully structured venue – the ‘Hobby Centre’. In addition, there are an impressive number of museums, including the Butterfly Museum. Since this is a four show weekend, our time is limited and for a mere $8, this is a worthy alternative to the distant NASA space-station.

Hobby Centre, Houston

After nine shows in six days, we say goodbye to Houston and hello to Pensacola, Florida for our first day off. I must admit after a ten hour bus journey and a long few days, we are collectively overjoyed to have some quality free time as we look forward to the busy week ahead.

Tip of the Week:
Skipping is an effective method of building fitness. Short, quick bursts are highly beneficial. Take 15mins, using 4 minute intervals with 1 minute break between each.

It’s Sunday and my alarm sounds at 5am. Normally I would consider this a ridiculous hour of the morning and sluggishly hit “SNOOZE”. But today is by no means normal. Today, I am about to embark on another exciting tour with ‘Riverdance’. For the next five months, I will be travelling across USA & Canada, to over 80 destinations, performing to thousands of people every week and ultimately living my dream. Needless to say I didn’t even contemplate ”snoozing” this morning!

After saying my goodbyes, which is always difficult, I prepare for the long journey ahead. We experience very bad turbulence on the way, so we are delighted to arrive safely in Dallas, Texas, the first stop of the tour.

Upon arrival, we are greeted by our uber organised tour managers, Ryan and Oran who present us with welcome packs, full of useful information for the first week of tour. Considering I have packed everything but the kitchen sink, it takes a while for me to gather my luggage. Thankfully, our hotel (Hotel Indigo) is just a 20min drive from the airport and after a quick bite to eat at a local Italian, we retreat for some much needed rest.

Our first starbucks of the tour at Newark Airport - Declan Masterson, Dave McGauran, Maeve Fearon & Fiona McCabe

The first day of tour is normally quite hectic but some of the dancers are delayed due to bad weather conditions, so our call is much later than expected. This is good news as it means we can explore the city before rehearsals. Similar to any tourist visiting Dallas, our first stop is of course the famous spot where John F Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. The 6th Floor Museum is a must but I decided to spend my money on something much more appealing – the John Paul Gautier exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. With over 120 designer dresses on display and opening in only two US cities this year, it would attract even the slightest of fashion enthusiasts. My excitement is soon quelled though when we realise it doesn’t open on Monday! Instead, we move onto the Dallas Farmers Market to pick up some fresh fruit, which is essential for staying healthy on tour. Luckily, we find a gorgeous little cafe close to our hotel for lunch (Metropolitan Cafe) and after a quick ‘siesta’, we catch our bus to the “Dallas Music Hall” for rehearsals at 5pm.

John Grimes outside Dallas Museum of Art

Rehearsals are demanding, but there is great excitement in the air and everyone is really looking forward to dancing after our recent break. Due to jetlag, we are pretty exhausted but a fellow dancer Kincaid (originally from Dallas) invites us to his house for some home cooked food. Unsurprisingly we don’t pass up the opportunity but with opening night in mind and an early start the following morning, we soon head back to the hotel. It is worth a mention that one of our new male dancers, James Greenan is performing lead for the very first time in Dallas. This has certainly heightened our enthusiasm for opening night rehearsals and for the week ahead.

Tune in next week to hear all about opening night and for more about our performances in Longview and Houston.

Packing

Well this week began with the old ritual of taking down of the suitcase from my attic and since Hawaii wasn’t all too long ago, my case happens to be cobweb-free. (Sigh of relief!)

So I started the packing process with searching for my dance shoes. Since I haven’t put a foot under me since the New Years’ Eve Dublin Performance, I had a spot of trouble locating their whereabouts. So, after a brief self-chastise for my carelessness, I carefully placed my precious dance shoes in first so as not forget all about them when I get caught up with sorting jewelry and evening accessories! Pumps and treble shoes: check. Full steam ahead….

<img class="size-large wp-image-23299 " style="border-width: 0px;" title="Scarves, scarves and more scarves. The packing continues

Wouldn’t you think at this stage in my life, with all the past experience of travel I would learn to pack quickly and efficiently? Let me tell you however it is not an easy task compressing ones whole wardrobe and personal effects into two not-so-generously-sized cases. Twenty plus weeks, multiple climates, too many states; Being on the road is easier said than done!

Farewells

I estimate I have done close to ten tours since my career in Riverdance began and I am still not accustomed to the farewells. Who is? It doesn’t get easier. Between the festive season, I have done my fair share of galavanting spent the last fortnight meeting up with friends and relatives for a pots of tea and dinners to catch up and to bid my farewells and I am just about drained! A flying visit en route to Belfast brought ex- Riverdancer, Brendan Dorris to Dublin’s city centre. He and I met for a quick rendezvous and we were soon joined by dancers Padraic Moyles and Niamh O’ Connor. Former male principal, Craig Ashurst also graced us wit his presence in between rehearsals for the new show ‘Celtic Woman’. Craig has since left camp Riverdance. He will be sorely missed however we wish him the very best with all his future endeavors. Despite hugs goodbye and distant waves, in this modern world of today, with the blessed skype, facebook, twitter, texting et cetera, who is faraway?

Well I have stashed away enough DVDs and movies on my hardrive to take me into the Summer season of the Gaiety Theatre! Deciding upon which books to bring was another packing obstacle. Those that made the cut have made there way into a neat pile now in my carryon bag. My journey will commence with a fresh reading list of one of the Nesbit classics many of you are familiar with;” The Railway Children”, Jack Kerouacs “On the Road” and a more modern biography of Amy Winehouse. I’m hoping they charm me into their world of imagination and inspiration.

The Last Supper(s)

A brunch in the Powerscourt Centre in the heart of Dublin set me up nicely for a last minute scout around the stores. Organic potato and leek soup cup nestled on the side of my egg salad sandwich on homemade brown bread was enough to make me smile. The evening was met with a mouthwatering homemade beef stew with every vegetable imaginable! Of course I left plenty of room for a slice of the parent’s (premature) birthday cake. Since I won’t be home for the two important birthdays this month I figured why not celebrate early?! Besides, I couldn’t leave without missing out on some of Marks & Spencer’s famous butter icing!

So enough of Dublin’s fair city and quaint Ireland. We shall have to put her on hold temporarily. Here’s to diners and drive-throughs. Join me on my adventure and enjoy my blogs. Bon Chance Shannon Company!

Fiona

Fiona wears black satin dressing robe (Victoria’s Secret) courtesy of Riverdance’s Wardrobe Department. Many of the girls wear robes to protect our costumes from water spills and keep them makeup free! They are very useful backstage in between quick changes. For example running to a massage if under time constraint or awaiting a zip or button to be altered in Wardrobe! I usually wear it over my Capezio black tights and bodysuit if a particular theatre is warm backstage and I do not want to overheat!

Riverdance was first performed during the 7-minute interval of the Eurovision Song Contest on 30 April 1994.

It received a standing ovation. Later that year, the BBC commissioned a repeat performance of the act for the 1994 Royal Variety Show, when it was introduced on stage by Sir Terry Wogan. At Congratulations : 50 Years of Eurovision, it was named as one of the most popular interval acts in the history of the contest.

Almost two decades later and Riverdance has grown from strength to strength. Now one of Ireland’s most internationally renowned acts , Riverdance has promoted our green isle with their traditional style of dance adapted to a new modern audience. Bill Whelan’s Riverdance has become a global success, reaching homes and stadia from New York to Beijing and Paris to Australia.
